FULVIO ROITER. PHOTOGRAPHIES 1948-2007
The Casa dei Tre Oci is presenting the first retrospective show of work by the great Fulvio Roiter since his death on April 18 2016. 200 photos, vintage for the most part, recount the whole artistic path of this Venetian photographer.
Promoted by the Fondazione di Venezia, in partnership with the City of Venice, the show ranges over the whole of Fulvio Roiter’s career in photography, and is the most complete monographic show ever to be devoted to the artist, and the first to be held since his recent death. This is a tribute and a memento that the Casa dei Tre Oci has decided to dedicate to the photographer who, more than any other, has conjoined the image of Venice to his name.
The exhibition, curated by Denis Curti and made possible by the precious contribution of Lou Embo, the photographer’s wife, will show 200 photographs, vintage for the most part, from which will emerge the wide range and the internationality of Fulvio Roiter’s work and will confirm his standing as one of the most significant photographers of our time. The exhibition starts from the origins and reasons that determined his first attempts at photography, which took place at the height of the period of neo-realism, from which this Venetian photographer inherited his compositional refinement. The exhibition layout reveals his innovative and amazing repertoire of Venice and its lagoon, but also his journeys to New Orleans, Belgium, Portugal, Andalusia, and Brazil. It is divided into nine sections, each the expression of a specific period in the life and style of Roiter: L’armonia del racconto, The Harmony of the Story; Tra stupore e meraviglia: l’Italia a colori, Amazement and Wonder: Italy in Colour; Venezia in bianco e nero: un autoritratto, Venice in Black and White: a Self-Portrait; L’altra Venezia, The Other Venice; L’infinita bellezza, Endless Beauty; Oltre la realtà, Beyond Reality; Oltre i confini, Beyond Boundaries; Omaggio alla natura, A Tribute to Nature; L’uomo senza desideri, The Man Without Desires. In this way the fluid and coherent exhibition itinerary marks out the steps of a life wholly devoted to photography, and searches out those mental depths that inspired his poetics, and that had as their only reference point a pure and sincere passion, one experienced by the artist through journeys, discoveries, and unconditioned loves.
The installation of the show has been widened to include video screenings, spectacular enlargements, and some twenty original books which, besides illustrating Roiter’s work on the page, also allow us to see the many contributions by authors who have written about his work, including Andrea Zanzotto, Italo Zannier, Alberto Moravia, Ignazio Roiter, Fulvio Merlak, Gian Antonio Stella, Roberto Mutti, Giorgio Tani, and Enzo Biagi. There is also a brief but intense recollection by his wife Lou of their first meeting in Belgium, the start of a human and professional relationship that lasted forty years.
