The Casa dei Tre Oci is hosting the Venetian galleries and photography exhibition in the piano nobile rooms as part of the Tre Oci Tre Mostre / Giudecca photography event. A selection of works from six Venetian galleries that have been working for some time in the field of photography. One of the Casa dei Tre Oci’s main aims is to increase the knowledge, study and appreciation of photographic culture in the Venice area, which is closely linked to photography for historical reasons. The interaction with the area has found a natural outlet in the Venetian galleries dedicated to the sector, which are constantly committed to supporting the art system. The result is a variegated mirror, which gives rise to numerous stimuli for reflection and is intended to offer the visitor a crosssection of the different methods of artistic production in the photography field.
I really do believe that there are things nobody is able to see until they’ve been photographed
Diane Arbus’s assertion is the basis of my passion and everyday interest in photography. I think that this brief reflection can help us highlight one of the most interesting aspects of making pictures: photography serves to make us see, and thus discover, that which we are unable to see with the eyes. And here the great Ando Gilardi comes to my aid. He said, with wise concision: “writing about photography is difficult, very difficult... It is not necessary to have painted to write about painting, but you have to have been a surgeon to write about surgery. And photography is a surgical operation, the camera is a scalpel, the darkroom an operating theatre...”. It is as if to say that photography is like the idea of a rent in reality. It means making a piece of the world your own and then returning it to those who want to see and know. It is thus the theme of the awareness that pervades the works presented by the Venetian gallery owners. Each one of these photographers states his point of view, always in different ways, with different techniques and formats, on new or known subjects and questions. He takes up a position and turns the gaze into sentiment. This is the difference between the documentary approach and the assumption of responsibility. This is the real task of photography.
